1) when 1 is added to a number and the answer then trebled,it gives the same result as doubling the number and then adding 4. find the number?
2) solve the following:
a) 2x² = 18
b) 2x² = 72
c) 3x² = 27
d) 4x² = 36
e) 5x² = 5
3) solve the following:
a) 3x + 1= 2x +6
b) 4x + 3= 3x +7
c) 5x -1= 3x + 19
d) x + 2= ½x -1
e) x + 15= 4x
f) 3x + 3 = 2x + 12

Hmmm, this looks like home work to me!
Well I’m not going to give you the answer in that case, but a hint, for at least question one.
Why don’t you say the number is x, then re-write the question
So 1 is added to a number and the answer then trebled is the same as
1 + x = ? then ? Multiplied by 3, or:
(1+ x)*3
It gives the same result as doubling the number and then adding 4
is then the same as:
(2x +4)
so we can re-write this as
(1+ x)*3 = (2x +4)
The next step is to rearrange the equation to give it in terms of x
Remember if you do something to one side of the equation, you have to then do it to the other side
